Malta Funds Industry Association and FinanceMalta organise a Hedge Fund Discussion Seminar in London

A Discussion Seminar event titled ‘AIFMD implementation – experiences, challenges and opportunities’ was organised by the Malta Funds Industry Association and FinanceMalta in conjunction with the Hedge Fund Review on the 8th May 2015 at the Corinthia Hotel in London.

In the opening address, Mr Kenneth Farrugia, Chairman of the Malta Funds Industry Association and FinanceMalta provided an overview of the evolution of Malta’s financial services industry, the growth in the Funds sector and its critical success factors together with brief highlights on the impact of the AIFMD directive on the industry.

Mr Joseph J. Agius, Deputy Director at the Securities and Markets Unit within the Malta Financial Services Authority then provided an overview of the AIFMD from a regulatory perspective touching on the introduction of a Rulebook, Malta’s position in relation to the ESMA guidelines as well as the initiatives undertaken by the Authority to support the industry during and post the implementation process.

The program for this event, also included a panel discussion moderated by Mr Luke Smolinski, Editor at the Hedge Funds Review. The panellists, Mr James Farrugia (Partner, Ganado Advocates), Mr Joseph J. Agius (Deputy Director, Securities and Markets Unit, MFSA), Mr Michael Galea (Head, Investment Management & Fund Services, Calamatta Cuschieri) and Dr Karl Strobl (Chairman, Melidon Holdings Limited), discussed and shared their experiences and challenges in advising, authorising, supervising and launching AIFs in Malta and the opportunities and benefits of setting up AIFs and AIFMs in Malta.
